David & Goliath
Where I get my strength, my peace, my hope, my life
His Presence
1 Samuel 17:13
“And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.”
The three eldest sons of Jesse went to the battle, but it was David who ended up being the champion of the war. David was the youngest and small in stature. No one would have thought David could win against Goliath. But he did. David killed the great giant and won the battle because David was fighting for God.
David did what he did because He believed. He believed he could win. He believed he was able. He believed in the God who created each soul and taught our hearts to trust in this strength that He gave. David won because he followed God.
He didn’t win because he was stronger. He didn’t win because he was honorable. He didn’t win because he was able. He didn’t win because he believed in his own strength. He didn’t win because he thought the giant Goliath was weaker. No. David killed Goliath because God made it happen. David won because David followed God.
I wonder, sometimes, what his big brothers must have thought when David cut off the giant’s head. Did they think they were dreaming? Did they think that David was out of his mind when he went forward to battle? Did they think they were seeing things, having a psychotic episode? I don’t doubt they had their thoughts that were far from believing. Yet, I have not a doubt that they were proud of their little brother who went above and beyond the call of duty.
David came to the battlefield to bring food for his warring brothers. He left the battlefield as the greatest warrior of them all. If you don’t see it, I’ll say it. God did that.
God does things that are beyond our understanding. Greater than our expectations. Far more wonderful that we can explain or describe. God is an awesome God. He doesn’t do anything half way. When He answers a prayer, He does it with full promise for healing, health, happiness, hope, heaven.
This God of the universe is a God who doesn’t leave anything out. He doesn’t leave out the grace we need when we believe He doesn’t leave out the hope we need when we plead for His forgiveness. He doesn’t leave out the joy we need when we seek His Holy Spirit. He doesn’t leave out the air we breathe when we first come into this world and He doesn’t leave out the light we see when we take our final breath.
Our God knows our hearts, our souls, our spirits. And He gives us the most precious peace, the most amazing joy, the grace to believe, the faith that can take us through the worst that comes and help us to feel the love that we need when we give others a part of what He’s given to our spirits when we sought Him out.
This God I serve shows me that whatever comes, I can know….
Despite the cancer that tries to destroy me, I can still breathe easy. He is near. He is with me. He is blessing away the shadow who creates the fear in me.
Despite the depression, He is with me. I can feel His love writing hope through me, even as the doubts and dread try to darken my hope and destroy me.
Despite the anger. Despite the doubt. Despite the fears. Despite the tears. Despite the pain, the sorrow, the anxiety… He is here and He is loving me through the worst that is. He is healing and helping and offering me hope even when I’m not sure how to cope.
Despite the worst, God is alive and He is mine. And, I will survive. I’ll do more than survive. I’ll abide in the love that only He could offer. Love that is poured out on my heart. Love that is alive in my soul. Love that only God could have flowed through my life. Love that showed me what it was made of when Jesus hung on that cross. Love that revealed the answer to me when He came back from the grave to tell me that I have hope beyond what I can explain. Hope that love has made a way.
I have the victory because He came and I have eternity because He is still the same Jesus who said He’s forgiven my sin and He is living within, a forever friend, assurance that I can win. He is the way, the truth, the life. And, I live in the wonder of knowing His presence is my heart’s greatest hope.
The Story It’s the story, pouring from my soul Will God hear? Will He make me whole? It’s the miracle of His love I’m told, Comes from glory, far brighter than gold It’s the story, written with ink from blood Blood shed by a Savior, a cleansing flood It’s the beauty of a life sacrificed for love Sent by God, who lives in heaven above It’s the story, a sea of joy and hope Precious song, a melody saying I can cope It’s the still, small voice spreading light Promise of eternity where He shines so bright It’s the story, on the mountain, in the valley The One who writes our story, never will dilly dally It’s the journey, where we pray and seek His grace In the everlasting, where we’ll meet Him face to face It’s the story, written by the hand of One Who is the reason – He is God’s only Son It’s with wisdom that He spares no soul escape Because we love Him – with love that is agape It’s the story, seeking the Father and the Son Also the Holy Spirit, who can never be outdone It’s the prayers who whisper life to each believer He is love and He is definitely not a deceiver It’s the story, written on the heart Telling the believer, they’ve been set apart It’s the life given to Jesus, our soul’s prayer With a promise, because of Him, we’ll never despair It’s the story, the sound of love and life From those who believe He heals all strife It’s the reason that I give up my own way To follow after this Savior who will never betray I love Jesus and I pray He will see my heart With Him beside me, I’ll know just where to start I’ll start with love and give all that I have to love Assured by the hope that He’ll come down from above It’s the story of a heart that’s been remade Because He saved me when I kneeled and prayed He’s the way, the truth and life… eternally mine With all my life, I’ll praise Jesus, the light divine
