A Selfish Girl and A Steadfast Love Philippians 2:3-5 3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. 5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: There is a selfish girl living in my past, sometimes she rises up, despite my efforts to remind her she is really just an outcast There is a selfish world, where she feels at home no one knows the truth – I’ve battled her from my youth… this war can become so noisome! There is a selfishness that presses in, filling hearts with darkness, shadows feed upon the joy and hope souls are wed to the cruelest sin. There is a selfish girl inside me, sometimes it feels like she is my guide pouring out her grief, her pleasure it seems oh, how this selfish girl falls to her knee! There is a selfish heart who believes even this sin – which always plagues me, can be forgiven by the One who frees, the One who bought my soul – He relieves. There is a selfishness that is hard to overcome it leaves me feeling so out of control like I’m warring with an evil I can’t understand, an evil that reveals to me, what I could become. There is a selfish girl living in my past, she sometimes rises up, despite my efforts to keep her down, but, oh precious Jesus – He is always steadfast!
* Charles Spurgeon’s ministry was so impactful because he sought first and foremost to make much of Jesus Christ through the enabling power of the Holy Spirit. He wrote, “We, my brethren, who are preachers of the Word, have but a short time to live; let us dedicate all that time to the glorious work of magnifying Christ.”
How can someone accomplish such a task? He continues, “If we alone had the task of glorifying Christ, we might be beaten; but as the Holy Spirit is the Glorifier of Christ, His glory is in very safe hands.”
Every Christian is to be about the same business as Spurgeon was, seeking to magnify Christ and minister to others in a way that relies on the Spirit of God to operate in the souls of men.
This is why Spurgeon has proven himself to be so worthy a guide towards a deeper understanding of the work and person of the Holy Spirit. He not only accomplished great things for the Kingdom of God, but he humbly recognized that any work of his hands – no matter how remarkable – would have been meaningless were it not for the Spirit’s work in and through him.
